Summer is almost here, which in British terms means occasional sunshine! This is usually accompanied by panic planning to make the most of those rare rays before they disappear as quickly as they came. Everyone knows the best past times in sunshine involve cocktails or a glass of vino at least and where better than at one of the fabulous rooftops that London has to offer. Here’s a few we’ve discovered for you to enjoy the next time the sun pays a visit to the capital.
Soho Sky Terrace
I love this place! This bar is located on the sixth floor of the beautiful Courthouse Hotel opposite Carnaby Street. Likes its neighbour Aqua Spirit this enjoys a great location, perfectly situated for a spontaneous visit on a sunny afternoon or evening ahead of a dinner in central. This has a real Ibiza, party vibe. This is usually buzzing but spacious enough for you to comfortably soak up the atmosphere. You can feel transported from the city for a moment in high temperatures. The prices are reasonable and the menu ranges from Pimms to cocktails and wines. This is my favourite choice and a great spot for a couple enjoying a date night or a cheeky tipple with the girls. Recently we visited for a lively aperitif before heading out for the evening.
Well we couldn’t do a rooftop round up without a pop up now could we?! Sisu is right next to Marble Arch and has recently arrived for summer. Offering a more casual vibe, there’s no frills here, just great cocktails in a cute layout. Sisu has some seriously attentive staff on hand, we went along just a couple of days after opening and they told us all about the well thought out cocktail choices that were all created in order to serve you fast and keep you refreshed in warm temperatures. We were lucky enough to enjoy a quiet day but we expect the crowds to embark there once we have some real sun. Sisu is where East meets West London with beach and garden style furnishing and the classic cool jam jar glasses. Go for great service and a tasty tangy cocktail to cool down in a relaxed setting on a sunny day.
The Roof Deck (Selfridges)
If you’re like us then you can while away an impressive amount of time in the Selfridges Beauty and Food Halls. Nothing tops off those days like a trip to the gorgeous bar on top of the store. The view is not the best but it is always bustling and offers the perfect break and refreshment if you are likely to go for round two in the store. Expect Selfridges prices, crowds, service and decor. We have been a couple of times the restaurant is extremely popular but if there is standing space you can perch by the bar which is still lovely on a sunny day, particularly when they open up the roof. We love the prosecco served in vintage champagne glasses.
Radio Rooftop Bar
This classic choice based in the Strand offers amazing panoramic views of the city. It’s an awesome place to be in high temperatures with a great balance of cool and classy without being stuffy. Book in advance, brunch is very popular between 11am-3pm on Saturday and Sunday. Some of the menu was sold out when we visited on a Saturday at lunchtime in April. Expect London prices but not unreasonable. This is a great spot for a bite and a few drinks with some tunes and great sights in the background. We had French Toast and Sweetcorn Fritters with rose, tasty and with great service.
Madison’s rooftop is on the sixth floor at a shopping complex in St Pauls. This offers a beautiful view of the area and the cathedral as well as tasty fresh cocktails. It has a gorgeous neighbouring restaurant if you plan to extend your stay. We visited on a quiet Bank Holiday Monday when the weather was not the best and it was not too crowded, so our lack of booking wasn’t a problem. It is not the largest bar so in the height of summer I would book in advance. This is a lovely outdoor terrace space for a quick bite and a quiet drink. Come ready to pay what you’d expect for a cocktail in central, would recommend the Rooftop cocktail to fellow gin lovers.
Aqua Spirit on Argyll Street is in a perfect location. This is a great bar to drop by after a spot of shopping on Carnaby, Bond or Oxford Street. We were lucky enough to be greeted with some sun on this visit! So you can enjoy the more summery shots for this one! We paid a little more than usual for our glasses of wine but enjoyed being closer to the lovely warm weather. This offers a lovely bar and outdoor space for a drink in the sun however it is not one for the view. The layout is very nice and the atmosphere is good and of course it is right in the middle of everything. Great one for a cheeky midday stop when enjoying some retail therapy with the girls.
